The build point field is an upcoming feature (already implemented, the server will be updated today or tommorow) that will replace all currently used BP computation code. This is something new in Tremulous and might be confusing, so in this article I'm going to explain how it works and why it was implemented.
What is a BP field?
It means that the entire map into cubes. Each cube has a limited amount of BPs and building buildings depletes nearby cubes. This limits how much can be built per unit of volume. In other words, players will be able to build numerous small bases and huge forts will no longer be possible.
Note: Builders' HUD will display the remaining BP in the area. The counters on the top of the screen will no longer be functional (I've no idea what to display there).
Note: each team has its own field and they don't interact with each other.
BP recovery
Build points will still disappear when a building is destroyed, which means that bases will be impossible to build where another base was destroyed earlier. The new thing is that not 100% of BP will be lost, the percentage can be set by a server admin.
Why?
The current BP system prevents games from being endless but it makes forward bases infeasible. BP fields don't have the problem. Furthermore, building density will be limited, so hardcore camping will be a lot harder (while making rushing more rewarding).
Most human weapons (Rifle, Shotgun, etc.) will no longer cause knockback which hopefully will make chomping with a Dragoon while being shot at a lot easier.
Human movement is now vq3, which means there's no stamina, no sprinting, no dodging and the speed is the same in all directions (and equal 320 units per second).
Trample damage reduced by 75%.
Pounce damage reduced by 75%.
Server updates are now almost entirely automated, which means that new changes can be introduced very quickly (in a few minutes) and there won't be any more broken updates from now on. The versioning scheme has also changed (the two last numbers are date and time at which the update was built).
