There was a general gist of agreement with enneract's changes in that thread, it's only a shame more players did/do not read the forum, we don't have an effective way of polling players who don't browse the forum (in-game polls tend to be ignored, telling people to read the forum often has no effect if they don't care to).

Well, we've been listening to the players and doing changes based on the feedback received. The latest bigger changes before the major patch were
  • Removing dodge

  • Nerfing the goon pounce and rant trample damages

  • Removing ability from basis to dual bomb.
After that I went on *two week* vacation and we had the wraith patch set included - perhaps it had a bit too many changes at once and too much of just removing stuff - as when i came back the server already was practically empty.

Now we've been back to the game play before that patch for a few weeks and the player count's remained the same - so at least the changes alone can't be the issue?

Running the server and developing the mod and the stats does take a considerable amount of each contributor's free time & effort as well as the (admittedly rather small) cost of running the servers. If people don't like the game/mod/server then the best course of action would be to open a constructive discussion at the forum and we might be able to improve things towards that direction.

We will be pushing out at least a few more patches, but in the longer run there wont be much point in hosting empty servers for a dead (or perhaps already undead at this point in time) game that many of us at least used to like.

As for community side issues - the forum is the best place to handle those through civilized discussion - and regarding the already partially discussed case of new source having been permabanned. I never wanted us to have permanent bans but after long discussions with Kai i did let the ban remain - as long as Kai'd have a chat with New Source at some point to try to come to terms under which that could've been lifted. For some reason that chat never happened though, and after various other changes I've lifted all bans the server had - and in the future the max ban length will be from a few hours to a few days.

As some may have noticed we've also started hosting an Unvanquished server as that game is aiming to be a successor for tremulous with a bit more modern game engine and hardware support. That server wont be receiving any new edge modifications at least for a while yet as the game is still in alpha stage. In the longer run the idea is (or at least was) to keep supporting both tremulous and Unvanquished servers as long as we'd have player base for those.

In short:
  • We're still working on things and hoping to provide a fun enough environment for people to play in
  • We're hosting both Tremulous GPP and Unvanquished at the moment
  • If the situation doesn't improve within a sensible time period we're gonna drop support for Tremulous and continue work on Unvanquished only.
Personally I've invested way too much time on the game and on maintaining the forum, the stats, the New EDGE mod and the game servers and as an added bonus I'm gonna permanently uninstall tremulous and quit the entire game for good once our tremulous servers go down.

Quote:open a constructive discussion at the forum
Maybe 10 players read the forum, maybe 5 players post.

Perhaps leave some "at game start" message to come here. And remove the main page. It looks cool, but I takes a while to figure out how to get to actual forums.

Not SOME reason. NS behaviour didn't change at all.

End of school break or 6 months?

My opinion is that the server is mostly empty because of summer vacation and a positive feedback loop (few players playing -> people don't want to play -> even fewer players, et cetera until the server is empty) and that blaming the developers for it is a post hoc fallacy.

That said, I think people will probably come back eventually. In case they don't, there will be no reason for me to stay in the Tremulous community and I'll move on to Unvanquished and/or other games permanently.

ppl will come back at the end of vacation, I am sure.
I will not be able to play the 2 next week, but I don't left trem.
Try to join the server at the same time, like 21-22 hour UTC/GMT in order to have a least 4 players, to play 2 vs 2.

Who is ready to play in one hour, or now? send a message in the shoutbox and I come

To grmg about the actual schedule, around 6 months is a good enough estimate for a sensible time period in this case, no point being too hasty at it.

Just needed to clarify that side of things too as the discussions too often seem to be centered around quitting due to bad vibes/ whatever... As it is, that kind of messages contribute very little to anything - if things aren't as you'd like them to be it still is the best option to start a discussion detailing what is wrong and why, preferrably with ideas on how to improve and see what others think of it too.

I've been quiet for a while because every time I start to write a reply I get very annoyed.

I like things that are neat and orderly.  I like game design that is well considered and balanced (aliens get something, humans get something to counteract it).  Considering how small this community is, I appreciated that we could have discussions about the future of the game.  The biggest problem was camping and there was a lot of discussion about ways to fix it.  Not a single one of them was implemented.  So imagine my surprise when I log in one day and see massive changes to *fundamental* aspects of this game: no basilisk, no poison, no trappers, wraith which was poorly thought out.  All of this because they were supposedly "annoying" and "useless". Then, when people started to complain, we get even dumber ideas like a cashless society and removing basic aliens because they will be "useless as soon as their advanced variants are unlocked".  Triple grenades which can practically wipe out the alien base. And lets not forget the tweak to the credit system which could leave you at S2 for 20 minutes (no helmet against adv mara, fun!) and then practically skip S3 and S4.

These changes prove to me the devs don't really know what they are doing.  They talk amongst themselves, remove gameplay features that were thoroughly tested by the original Tremulous devs, and then literally ruin the game. The forum topic about everyone's age really opened my eyes to the fact that there are bunch of kids running this server which, while impressive, isn't very encouraging.

So, combine my high ping with my distaste for the "shaken not stirred" approach, I switched to Enemy Territory.  Good day sir.

I said good day.

@up
So, first you complain how bad the recent changes are without any useful explanation whatsoever then you have balls to call us kids? Good riddance.
